Moyes denies move for Bale.

Manchester United boss David Moyes has said the club have not made a move for Tottenham's Gareth Bale.

The Welsh star has looked set for Real Madrid for most of the summer with the Spanish giants having offered a world record £86m for the 24-year-old.

Spurs have stalled on accepting the bid but the saga has taken a fresh twist with the news that Spurs were considering offers from more than one club, according to Sky sources.

Following the goalless draw with Chelsea on Monday night, Moyes was asked if Manchester United was that club and the Scot responded with "no".

Bale is expected to return to training on Tuesday morning having not played since a pre-season friendly against Swindon in July.

However, with Moyes enduring a frustrating summer in the transfer market so far, it would be a surprise if United do not make any further moves before the transfer window closes next week.

Regarding possible interest in Bale, Moyes told Sky Sports: "I said at the start that Manchester United will always be interested in the best players and we'll always be looking to try and improve the team.

"The owners have given me every opportunity to get who I want so we'll continue to look for those players. It's been tough in this window but we're always looking at the best players."

Jose gives Rooney ultimatum.

Wayne Rooney has been handed a deadline for deciding on making a Manchester United exit by Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

The ultimatum was revealed after Chelsea held the defending Premier League champions in a 0-0 stalemate on Monday night.

Mourinho has already failed with two bids for the England star, who was cheered by United fans throughout a sparkling performance at Old Trafford, and has called on Rooney to state where he sees his future.

When asked if a third bid for Rooney was imminent, Mourinho said: "We have to speak but this club must be a very special club, because in every club in the world when a player wants to leave, they don't support him. 

They give him a hard time. But they support him all the way.

The much-anticipated meeting between Manchester United and Chelsea ended in anti-climax as Old Trafford witnessed its first goalless draw in the Premier League since May 2009.

David Moyes was taking charge of his first competitive home game since succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager, while Jose Mourinho had his sights sets on a third successive league win since returning to Chelsea.

In the end, despite an outstanding performance for United by the recalled Wayne Rooney, both Moyes and Mourinho had to settle for a point in the first blank scoreline here in 77 Premier League games, since United clinched the title against Arsenal in 2009.

Rooney was the game's most dangerous player and was vociferously backed by United's supporters throughout - as well as receiving vocal support from the travelling Chelsea fans who still hold out hope he can be lured to Stamford Bridge despite Moyes' insistence he would not be sold.
It was a game short on clear-cut chances and quality, with United's Danny Welbeck wasting the best opportunity when he shot wide just before the hour. Mourinho will be happier with the point but there was frustration for Moyes, who would have hoped to make a winning start at Old Trafford as he starts the task of retaining the Premier League won by Ferguson before his retirement.

Fulham 1-3 Arsenal.

Lukas Podolski grabbed a goal in each half as Arsenal secured a slick and clinical victory over Fulham in the teeming rain at Craven Cottage.

The Gunners, buoyed by a 3-0 midweek win over Fenerbahce in Champions League qualifying, were sharper early on and led through Olivier Giroud's strike.

 Podolski made it 2-0 with a measured 18-yard shot and then smashed home the visitors' third after the break.

Substitute Darren Bent pulled one back from close range but Arsenal held on.
Bent's debut strike, after great work by Dimitar Berbatov, gave Fulham hope in the final 13 minutes but Arsenal were full value for a much-needed win which will go some way to erasing the painful memory of last week's home humbling against Aston Villa.
Optimism was in short supply following that demoralising setback, but the impressive triumph against Fenerbahce in Istanbul had raised hopes and the inability to bring in new faces despite numerous high-profile transfer attempts was quickly forgotten.

Everton 0-0 West Brom.

West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Ben Foster produced an inspired performance to deny Roberto Martinez a first competitive victory as Everton manager.

Foster twice frustrated Steven Pienaar and Kevin Mirallas and also saved shots from Seamus Coleman, Ross Barkley and Marouane Fellaini at Goodison Park.
The Baggies' best chance fell to James Morrison, who was denied by Tim Howard.

Foster limped off with a foot injury late on, before Fellaini and Coleman struck the West Brom woodwork.

While Foster's afternoon ended in disappointment, his departure led to a Baggies debut for Luke Daniels, who has been at West Brom since 2004 but has had seven loan spells away from the club.
Albion manager Steve Clarke later said Foster "felt something pop" in his foot, and the Baggies boss faces a potential problem in goal and up front.
West Brom were hoping to build on their highest Premier League finish of eighth in 2012-13, but they have only collected one point from their opening two matches and failed to score a single goal.
Romelu Lukaku, who scored 17 Premier League goals during a season-long loan at The Hawthorns, has returned to Chelsea and his replacement, Nicolas Anelka, has hinted he may retire after the death of his agent Eric Manasse earlier in the week.

Hull 1-0 Norwich.

Yannick Sagbo won a penalty and was sent off for a headbutt as Robbie Brady's spot-kick gave Hull a battling Premier League win over Norwich.

Former Hull defender Michael Turner fouled Sagbo in the area and Brady calmly placed a low effort past Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy.
Sagbo was shown a straight red card moments later for a headbutt on Norwich captain Russell Martin.

Norwich played an hour with an extra man but could not find an equaliser.

The Canaries struggled to break down an organised Hull side despite manager Chris Hughton's attempts to add more firepower during the summer.
Hughton signed Dutch striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel for £8.5m from Sporting Lisbon and Gary Hooper from Celtic for about £5m.
Hooper was missing with an injury sustained in the opening game of the season against Everton, but Van Wolfswinkel had just a solitary chance of note.
Sweden forward Johan Elmander, who joined Norwich on a season-long loan from Galatasaray earlier in the week, came off the bench in the second half but was unable to influence proceedings.

Newcastle 0-0 West Ham.

Newcastle picked up their first Premier League point this season with a goalless draw against West Ham.

West Ham's Winston Reid went close to scoring an own goal in the first half before twice just failing to get a touch to set-pieces at the other end.
Hatem Ben Arfa was the home side's main threat with several efforts from long range, while Joe Cole shot just inches over the bar for the visitors.
Yoan Gouffran wasted a fine chance for Newcastle late on from close range. While West Ham created the better chances throughout, Gouffran's missed opportunity deep into time added on was the closest the game came to a goal.
It means that West Ham boss Sam Allardyce left Tyneside unbeaten for the third time since being sacked by Newcastle in 2008. The Hammers have picked up four points from their opening two games, following a 2-0 opening-day win over Cardiff.
Alan Pardew, in his 100th Premier League game as Newcastle manager, was without Yohan Cabaye for the second match in a row. The France midfielder was also left out of the 4-0 defeat by Manchester City in the wake of what Newcastle deemed a "derisory" offer of £10m from Arsenal.

Southampton 1-1 Sunderland.

Jose Fonte's late header earned a point for Southampton and denied Sunderland their first win of the season.

The Black Cats had been on course for victory thanks to Emanuele Giaccherini's second-minute header.
Jay Rodriguez had an early effort ruled out for offside, with replays proving inconclusive, while Saints team-mate Rickie Lambert had several chances.
But in the 88th minute, Fonte headed home James Ward-Prowse's free-kick from close range for a dramatic equaliser.
Sunderland, who were beaten by Fulham on the opening day of the season, took an early lead with Italian Giaccherini heading home Sebastian Larsson's corner from close range.
Southampton responded well and spent the next 45 minutes peppering the visitors' goal.
First Rodriguez had a goal disallowed for offside while Lambert saw his low header kept out at full stretch by Keiren Westwood before heading over from close range later in the half.

Stoke 2-1 Crystal Palace.

Stoke fought back from a goal down against Crystal Palace to provide manager Mark Hughes with a win in his first home game in charge of the club.

The Potters went behind in the Premier League match when Marouane Chamakh out-muscled Ryan Shawcross, cut inside Robert Huth and slid home his shot.
But in four second half minutes Charlie Adam stroked in a left-footed effort and Shawcross scored on the turn. And Stoke went close to adding to their lead when Steven Nzonzi hit the post.
The Potters showed they are still a work in progress as Hughes tries to bring both a more cultured approach and goals to their play.
However, although Premier League newcomers Palace acquitted themselves well, the hosts' renowned grit and determination are both still in evidence and those qualities were the basis of their victory.

Aston Villa 0-1 Liverpool.

Daniel Sturridge was the match-winner for a second straight week as Liverpool won at Villa Park to make their best start to a season for five years.

The Liverpool striker finished off a flowing first-half move to score his eighth goal in seven league games.
Villa were outplayed early on but improved in the second half, with Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet twice denying Christian Benteke.
Both sides had late penalty appeals waved away by referee Mark Clattenburg.
Liverpool last won their opening two matches of the season in 2008-9 and this victory means Brendan Rodgers's side extend their unbeaten run to 10 Premier League matches, a streak that began with a win at Villa Park in March. The platform for victory was set during a first half in which the visitors were utterly dominant. Villa improved markedly after the break but the damage was done.
It has been a brutal start to the season for Paul Lambert's young side. During their magnificent victory at Arsenal and contentious defeat at Chelsea, they displayed tangible signs of progress but against Liverpool they looked flat and, perhaps, fatigued by those two demanding trips to London.

Tottenham 1-0 Swansea.

Roberto Soldado's fourth goal in three games helped Tottenham to a deserved league win over Swansea.

The home side went close when visiting defender Ashley Williams headed against his own post and, from the rebound, blocked a Paulinho shot on the line.
But Spurs took the lead when Soldado coolly slotted in a penalty after Jonjo Shelvey's foul on Andros Townsend.

Swansea belatedly rallied and the closest they came was when a Chico Flores volley was tipped over.

Spurs forward Gareth Bale was conspicuous by his absence from White Hart Lane with the announcement of his transfer to Real Madrid apparently imminent.
However, Soldado is helping ease the disappointment over Bale's impending departure as Tottenham maintained their 100% start to the season against a Swansea side who have now lost both of their league games.
Both sides were convincing victors in the Europa League on Thursday - Spurs beating Dinamo Tbilisi 5-0 and Swansea easing to a 5-1 win over Petrolul Ploiesti.

Cardiff 3-2 Man City.

Cardiff City produced a stunning win over 2011-12 champions Manchester City to claim their first victory in the Premier League.

After falling behind to Edin Dzeko's powerful 52nd-minute opener, Aron Gunnarsson equalised after Joe Hart blocked Fraizer Campbell's shot.
Former Manchester United youngster Campbell then scored twice in eight minutes to put the home side in charge.
Alvaro Negredo set up a grandstand finish, but Malky Mackay's men held on.
The final whistle brought with it scenes of celebration from the packed crowd at the Cardiff City Stadium as the Bluebirds won in the top flight of English football for the first time since they were last there in 1962.

It was also the first top-flight victory for Mackay, who guided his team to the Championship title last season.

But it was a chastening experience for new Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, whose side brushed aside Newcastle 4-0 on Monday but surrendered a one-goal advantage in the Welsh capital.
The one disappointing aspect of the victory over the Magpies was an injury to skipper and defensive lynchpin Vincent Kompany.
And the Belgium international was sorely missed on Sunday, with midfielder Javi Garcia deployed as a makeshift defender.

West Brom bring in Sinclair.

West Brom have signed winger Scott Sinclair on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent move.

The 24-year-old struggled for playing time at the Etihad Stadium after joining City from Swansea last summer.
He played in only 11 Premier League games under Roberto Mancini last season and was not involved on the opening day of 2013-14.
Sinclair is also well known to Albion boss Steve Clarke, who watched his progress through the ranks at Chelsea.
"Scott understands he needs to play football and it will be good to work with him again," Clarke told the club's official website.
"We're delighted he feels this is the right club for him at this stage of his career. He is the type of player we were missing from the squad.
"He is a pure winger, who is quick, direct and scores goals - he has proven that over his career. He can play off the right or left and improves our attacking options.

Chelsea join race for Willian.

Chelsea are in advanced talks to sign Tottenham target Willian from Anzhi Makhachkala, according to Sky sources.

The Stamford Bridge club have made their move after London rivals Tottenham held talks with Willian earlier on Thursday.
Spurs were ready to splash £30m on the midfielder, who has been offered a five-year contract at White Hart Lane.
But the 25-year-old, who was also linked with Liverpool earlier in the summer, appears to be keeping his options open.
Chelsea have already been busy in the summer transfer window with forward Andre Schurrle arriving from Bayer Leverkusen for £18m.
The Blues also splashed around £8m on Marco van Ginkel from Vitesse Arnhem, and £3m on fellow midfielder Cristian Cuevas.
Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas says he knows nothing of Chelsea's apparent interest.
Speaking after Spurs' 5-0 win at Dinamo Tbilisi in the Europa League qualifying tie, Villas-Boas said: "We were just involved in a game so unfortunately I can't give you further information.

Branislav Ivanovic powered in a second-half header as Chelsea won a feisty game against Aston Villa.

Chelsea went ahead after Eden Hazard's shot was unluckily pushed into his own goal by Antonio Luna, before Christian Benteke struck a precise equaliser.
Ivanovic was left unmarked to convert a Frank Lampard free-kick, but only after Villa felt the defender should have been sent off for an elbow on Benteke.
Villa had a late penalty appeal for a handball by John Terry turned down.

There were heated scenes on the touchline between managers Jose Mourinho and Paul Lambert, as the Villa boss argued Ivanovic should have received more than a booking for the incident with Benteke.

The Scot was then further infuriated by the failure to award the injury-time penalty.
Lambert's inexperienced side were beaten 8-0 by the hosts in December, with six survivors remaining in the Villa starting line-up from that crushing defeat.
The visitors have progressed steadily from that low point, however, with their improvement on display in last Saturday's impressive 3-1 opening weekend victory at Arsenal.
Buoyed by Mourinho's winning return as manager against Hull, there was an equally positive mood among a vocal home support at a balmy Stamford Bridge.

Tottenham close on Willian.

Tottenham are close to completing the signing of Brazil international Willian for a club-record £30m, according to Sky sources.

The Anzhi Makachkala midfielder is undergoing a medical in London ahead of his proposed move, which would make him Spurs' third record signing this summer after deals of £17m and £26m for Paulinho and Roberto Soldado.
Willian had been linked with a move to Liverpool but appears to have been lured by the guarantee of European football at White Hart Lane this season.
Spurs could yet add Roma striker Erik Lamela to their ranks in a transfer that would take their outlay during this window to almost £120m.
A good proportion of that could be recouped if the club were to accept Real Madrid's world-record offer for Gareth Bale, and it is understood a resolution to the saga of the summer could now come within days.
Portugal left-back Fabio Coentrao has long been mentioned as a possible makeweight in any deal for Bale.
Speaking about Coentrao and Lamela at a press conference ahead of Spurs' Europa League game against Dinamo Tbilisi, Villas-Boas said: "They have not signed for Spurs. Both of them are great, great players, but I cannot extend myself."

Palace complete Puncheon deal.

Jason Puncheon has completed his move from Southampton to Crystal Palace on a season-long loan.

The move reunites winger Puncheon with his former Blackpool manager Ian Holloway.
The 27-year-old, who moved to St Mary's from Plymouth Argyle three years ago, has made 80 appearances for Southampton but was not part of Mauricio Pochettino's squad for the clash at West Brom on Saturday.
Puncheon, who began his career at Wimbledon, played in the Premier League under Holloway at Bloomfield Road during an 11-game loan spell in 2011 and was on Palace's books as a child.
He told the club website: "I think it's a great move for myself to come and play games. Obviously Crystal Palace are my hometown club and more importantly Ian Holloway is here as well.

New Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini enjoyed a dream Premier League start as his side swept past 10-man Newcastle with a superb display.

City began at a frantic pace with an energised Edin Dzeko crossing for David Silva's early opener.
Sergio Aguero steered a shot past Tim Krul for City's second before Steven Taylor saw red for a swipe at Aguero.
Yaya Toure curled in a free-kick after the break before Samir Nasri scored late on as City cruised to victory.
It was a resounding performance by an irrepressible-looking City, with summer signings Fernandinho and Jesus Navas handed starts and appearing accomplished throughout. Fellow debutant Alvaro Negredo also came on in the second half and was denied a goal after being ruled marginally offside

Indeed, had Krul not been in inspired form, the margin of victory could have been even greater for Pellegrini's side, who have won their last eight games against the Magpies.

Although the new additions adjusted well, it was Dzeko who was City's outstanding performer as he created two goals and peppered the Newcastle goal with several more efforts.
City have been the biggest spenders in the close season, investing nearly £87m on four new players, and their performance at a buoyant Etihad Stadium will give their Premier League title rivals plenty to consider, with the transfer window shutting on 2 September.

Wenger: tough to find players.

Arsene Wenger says he is still looking for the right additions to his Arsenal side, but needs his current squad to step up.

The Gunners made the worst possible start to the 2013/14 campaign on Saturday, as they slipped to a 3-1 defeat at home to Aston Villa and had Laurent Koscielny sent off.
The Emirates Stadium support made their feelings known throughout a forgettable contest for the hosts, with Wenger's failure to bolster his ranks this summer coming in for widespread criticism.

The Frenchman claims to understand the frustration in the stands and insists he is doing all he can to find fresh faces.

He is, however, looking for those already on his books to raise their standards - making the recruitment of big-money signings less of a necessity.
Pressed on why he has failed to spend during the current window, despite money having been made available, Wenger said: "Why isn't it being spent. I can return your question. Why isn't it being won by the players on the pitch?
"We do not spend the money because we do not find the players. I am not the only one for that.

 Southampton sign Osvaldo.

Southampton have continued to strengthen their squad before the end of the transfer window by signing Pablo Osvaldo from Roma.

The striker arrives at St Mary's on a four-year deal for an undisclosed club-record fee, rumoured to be £15m.
Although born in Argentina, the 27-year-old has been capped for Italy at both U21 and senior international levels.
And Osvaldo will now be reunited with Mauricio Pochettino, who was his manager during a successful 18-month spell with Spanish side Espanyol.
Osvaldo will be officially presented as a Southampton player on Monday, and he is expected to make his debut next Saturday against Sunderland.
Saints have already spent £12.5m on midfielder Victor Wanyama, who was signed from Celtic in July, as well as investing £8.5m in Lyon's Bosnia and Herzegovina international centre-back Dejan Lovren.

Chelsea 2-0 Hull City.

Oscar and Frank Lampard scored first-half goals as Chelsea marked the start of Jose Mourinho's second spell as Blues manager with victory over Hull.

Lampard had an early penalty saved by Allan McGregor, before Kevin de Bruyne set up Oscar to slot the hosts ahead.
McGregor again thwarted Lampard, but the England midfielder responded with a superb free-kick to double the lead.
Newly promoted Hull rallied after half-time but could not force their way back as Chelsea comfortably secured the win.
With his comeback match going to plan, Mourinho can now turn his attention to Wednesday's visit of Aston Villa.
Mourinho had said of his return to Stamford Bridge, "It's my dugout, my stadium, my people", and so it appeared as he emerged from the tunnel before kick-off to ear-splitting noise and a spine-tingling ovation.
The self-proclaimed "Happy One" - when he arrived in 2004 it was the "Special One" - waved to all sides of the ground and blew kisses to the fans before taking a seat as his new team set about dismantling the visitors.
There were three survivors from the line-up that started the opening match of his first spell - Petr Cech, John Terry and Lampard - while De Bruyne was handed a debut after spending last season on loan at Werder Bremen.
The 22-year-old Belgian slotted seamlessly into Chelsea's 4-2-3-1 formation, joining Eden Hazard and Oscar in supporting lone-striker Fernando Torres, with Lampard and Ramires sitting in midfield.

Crystal Palace 0-1 Tottenham.

Tottenham's record signing Roberto Soldado scored on his debut as Crystal Palace were defeated in their first top-flight match since 2005.

The £26m signing from Valencia coolly side-footed a penalty past Julian Speroni after Aaron Lennon's cross was handled by full-back Dean Moxey.
Spurs were without Real Madrid target Gareth Bale but were rarely troubled.
Palace had their best chance at the end, with Kagisho Dikgacoi firing straight at Hugo Lloris.
Soldado, 28, scored 24 goals in 35 appearances for Valencia last season and had the perfect start to his Premier League career.
Tottenham duo Kyle Walker and Aaron Lennon consistently linked well down the right - and their running eventually proved decisive just after half-time. Lennon found space in the area but his cross clattered into Moxey's outstretched hand. Tottenham did not win a penalty in the whole of the 2012-13 season but referee Mark Clattenburg pointed to the spot and Soldado kept his cool, slotting home as Speroni dived the wrong way.

David Moyes made a winning Premier League start as Manchester United manager with the champions cruising to a comfortable opening day victory at Swansea City.

Moyes has been handed the task of defending United's title following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement after 26 years at the end of last season - and this was business as usual with Robin van Persie the inspiration once more. Unsettled Wayne Rooney made a 30-minute appearance as a substitute and was greeted warmly by United's travelling support despite his unrest at Old Trafford.
Swansea's early good work was undone as Van Persie and Danny Welbeck struck twice inside two minutes just after the half-hour and United were never again under serious threat.
Van Persie capped an increasingly impressive United performance with a magnificent rising strike 18 minutes from time after he was played in by Rooney before Swansea's record £12m signing Wifried Bony, on as a half-time substitute, made an impact with a late goal but it was not enough to disrupt United's path to victory.

Premier League 2013/2014 results!!!

Finally after 3 months the Barclays Premier League is up and running once again, for what we hope is going to be another fantastic season: 

Liverpool 1-0 Stoke.

Liverpool secured their first opening-day victory at Anfield since 2001 as goalkeeper Simon Mignolet marked his debut with a dramatic late penalty save to deny Stoke a point.

With Brendan Rodgers's side apparently cruising to their first three points of the season, Daniel Agger inexplicably handled a free-kick in the penalty area with two minutes of the match remaining. Mignolet then produced a brilliant low save to deny Stoke striker Jonathan Walters from the resultant spot-kick, as well as blocking Kenwyne Jones' follow-up. Daniel Sturridge scored the only goal of the game eight minutes before half-time, drilling a low shot into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.
Liverpool should have won far more comfortably as a host of chances went begging. Kolo Toure and Jordan Henderson hit the woodwork, with Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic in man-of-the-match form.
But the visitors will count themselves unfortunate not to snatch a point. Not only did they waste their late penalty chance, Robert Huth's volley thundered against the crossbar early on.

Arsenal 1-3 Aston Villa.

Christian Benteke scored twice and Antonio Luna added a third as Aston Villa came from behind to stun Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on the opening day.

Olivier Giroud opened the scoring, but Benteke headed an equaliser after Wojciech Szczesny saved his penalty.
Benteke controversially put Villa ahead from the spot after a foul by Laurent Koscielny, who was later shown a second yellow card for a mistimed challenge.
New signing Luna raced clear to seal Arsenal's woe with a low strike.
The full-time whistle was greeted with resounding boos from the home crowd, although the arena was near-empty by that point.
Arsenal's only summer signing to date is the free transfer of 20-year-old French striker Yaya Sanogo from Auxerre, and supporters were repeatedly chanting for their club to spend some money.

Norwich 2-2 Everton.

Norwich's record signing Ricky van Wolfswinkel's superb header rescued a point in a thrilling opening-day encounter with Everton.

The Canaries took the lead against the run of play after the break when Steven Whittaker shot home from a tight angle after his initial strike hit the post.
Ross Barkley capped a superb display to level from long range and Seamus Coleman tapped in to make it 2-1.
But Van Wolfswinkel, who cost £8.5m, nodded in Whittaker's sliced cross.
The Netherlands international striker's towering header into the top corner will have given plenty of encouragement to a City side whose eagerness to improve on last season's 11th-placed finish was clear from their hectic summer transfer dealings.
Having spent around £25m during the close season, manager Chris Hughton could have a difficult time tempering the rising expectations around Carrow Road.

Most of the strengthening came in attacking areas with Hughton clearly mindful of the need to bolster a side who managed just 41 league goals last time out - the third worst in the top flight.

Only two of their seven new faces started, but both Van Wolfswinkel and winger Nathan Redmond made promising debuts.

Sunderland 0-1 Fulham.

Pajtim Kasami scored his first Fulham goal as they beat a dominant Sunderland on the opening day of the season.

The Black Cats, with five debutants, were the better team throughout but Kasami headed home from close range for the only goal in the second half.
Ondrej Celustka had the hosts' best chance but his 25-yard shot was saved brilliantly by Maarten Stekelenburg.
Ji Dong-Won could have rescued a point for Sunderland in the final minute but he headed Adam Johnson's cross wide.
Despite their win, the day ended on a worrying note for Fulham as £4m summer signing Stekelenburg came off injured and was replaced by David Stockdale.

Stekelenburg picked up a shoulder injury while denying Jozy Altidore, who was Sunderland's most lively debutant.

The United States striker, who moved from AZ Alkmaar this summer, caused Fulham's defence problems throughout. The 23-year-old looks to have bulked out since his teenage loan spell at Hull City, when he scored only one goal in 28 Premier League appearances.
But Sunderland failure to score will have caused some concern for manager Paolo Di Canio, who took over towards the end of last season and steered them to safety from relegation.

West Brom 0-1 Southampton.

Rickie Lambert followed up a goal on his England debut in midweek by scoring a last-minute winner from the penalty spot for Southampton.

A disappointing game was heading for a goalless draw when West Brom's Youssouf Mulumbu brought down Luke Shaw.
Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez had earlier hit the crossbar in a match of few clear-cut chances at The Hawthorns.
West Brom's best opportunity came when Graham Dorrans sent a 25-yard free-kick narrowly over the crossbar.
The dramatic finish was in sharp contrast to a scrappy encounter as West Brom struggled to get going despite the presence of new striker Nicolas Anelka.
Representing his sixth English club and making his first Premier League start for two years, the 34-year-old former France international endured a frustrating debut and was substituted seven minutes from time.

Although West Brom finished eighth in the Premier League last season, they have now won just one of their last 10 league games.

Southampton included four Academy produces in the starting line-up, while defender Dejan Lovren impressed on debut following an £8.5m move from Lyon.

West Ham 2-0 Cardiff.

West Ham United enjoyed a comfortable opening day win over Premier League new boys Cardiff City at Upton Park.

Midfielder Joe Cole and captain Kevin Nolan scored in each half, but the Hammers failed to convert a host of chances against newly promoted Cardiff.
Winger Matthew Jarvis, midfielder Mohamed Diame and striker Modibo Maiga all missed chances for the home side.
Substitute Nicky Maynard and midfielder Peter Whittingham came closest for Cardiff in the dying moments.

Liverpool in Willian talks.

Sky sources report that Liverpool have opened talks with Anzhi Makhachkala over the possible signing of Brazilian playmaker Willian.

The highly-rated 25-year-old only moved to Anzhi from Shakhtar Donetsk in January but the Russian side are now looking to offload their star players, because billionaire owner Suleiman Kerimov is scaling back his financial commitment to the club.
And Liverpool are eager to strengthen their attacking options, having failed to land Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who joined Borussia Dortmund from Shakhtar, and Atletico Madrid's Diego Costa.
Willian recently told ESPN Brazil: "He (Kerimov) made it clear that, if good bids arrive, he would certainly help us go.
"Now I'm waiting for a new bid to arrive in the next days from a few clubs, like Liverpool.
"If it's really Liverpool, then it is surely a great club. I'm hopeful and very calm, just waiting for the best."
Liverpool may face competition for the signature of Willian, who has come close to joining Tottenham and Manchester City in the past.

Suarez trains with Liverpool ahead of apology.

The Uruguayan international had been frozen out of first-team sessions after publicly demanding a transfer but the rift between player and club now appears be closing.
However, he will definitely not feature for Saturday's Premier League opener at home to Stoke because he has six games left to serve of the 10-game ban he received for biting Branislav Ivanovic of Chelsea last April.
Despite Suarez's oft-stated desire to play Champions League football and a pair of bids from Arsenal, Liverpool have remained firm in their stance that he is not leaving and it appears increasingly likely that he will still be at Anfield when his suspension is completed.
Sky Sports reporter Vinny O'Connor said: "Luis Suarez has apologised to (manager) Brandan Rodgers and apologised to his team mates over his general conduct.
"He has started his re-integration into the Liverpool first-team and trained with them on Friday.
"Over a week ago, Brendan Rodgers said he would need an apology from Luis Suarez, as would the fans and his team mates, after the apparent attempt by the player to force a move away from Anfield. It appears that the apology has come.

Bent set for move to Fulham.

Aston Villa forward Darren Bent will secure a loan deal to Fulham if he comes through a medical on Thursday.

Although Fulham boss Martin Jol rejected reports that a move for the unsettled striker was imminent, his Villa counterpart Paul Lambert confirmed on Thursday that Bent's transfer would go through barring any hitch with fitness checks in London.
"He's just away down to Fulham," said Lambert. "I think it's well-documented now that he's down there having a medical and that's the last I've heard."
Bent was the subject of a £4m bid from the Cottagers earlier in the summer, which was rejected by Villa, but the two clubs have reached an agreement with a view to a season-long loan.
It is also a big blow for Crystal Palace who had looked favourites to snare the 29-year-old.
Bent was a peripheral figure for Aston Villa last season, often left on the sidelines with Christian Benteke making his mark in Lambert's side.
And with new attacking options now available to Lambert, the Villa boss has opted to offload the striker they bought in January 2011 for around £24m from Sunderland.

Wenger vows to keep hunting.

Manager Arsene Wenger says Arsenal will continue to push all the way for new signings despite a frustrating period so far in the transfer market.

Chief executive Ivan Gazidis may have talked up the club's new "financial firepower" at the end of last season, but so far the only confirmed signing has been France Under-21 striker Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer from Auxerre.
After failing to land Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuain earlier in the summer, the Gunners have also been foiled in their attempts to sign Liverpool striker Luis Suarez and Bayern Munich's midfielder Luiz Gustavo.
As the clock ticks towards the September 2 deadline, Wenger told Arsenal Player: "We are active. We are in a situation like Manchester United, like Chelsea, where everybody expects signings and at the moment not a lot has happened.

No Arsenal deal for Perez.

Atletico Nacional have announced that Sebastian Perez will not be joining Arsenal following a recent trial with the Gunners.

Colombian midfielder Perez, 20, has spent some time with Arsenal this summer and played in their 3-1 pre-season friendly victory over Manchester City at the weekend.
However, he has not been granted a work permit and his club have confirmed that there will be no move to Emirates Stadium.
Asked about Perez's work permit situation, Atletico Nacional director Victor Marulanda is quoted as telling winsports.co: "We already knew that and were waiting for the response, but that wasn't possible and the player will keep working with us.
"The possibility of joining Arsenal has been ruled out."

Redknapp holds Parker hope.

Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp remains optimistic regarding his chances of landing Scott Parker from Tottenham Hotspur.

The 32-year-old midfielder has slipped down the pecking order at White Hart Lane following the summer arrivals of Paulinho and Nacer Chadli.
Former Spurs boss Redknapp hopes he can tempt Parker to Loftus Road and throw him into a Championship promotion push.
Reports have claimed that the England international underwent a medical at QPR on Tuesday and that a deal is close to being completed.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has told L'Equipe that Yoann Gourcuff would be prepared to accept a pay cut in order to seal a switch to Arsenal.

The France international has long been linked with a switch to Emirates Stadium, and talk of transfer this summer has resurfaced.
Lyon would be prepared to part with Gourcuff's salary if a suitable offer is tabled, and the 27-year-old would prefer a deal to be done to take him to the Premier League.
Aulas insists no loan agreement will be sanctioned with another French club - amid talk of interest from Lorient - meaning the ball is now back in Arsenal's court as the countdown to deadline day continues.
He told L'Equipe on Gourcuff, who netted once and provided two assists as Lyon started the new season with a 4-0 mauling of Nice on Saturday: "Can you see us paying part of his salary for him to play against us with another French club? We've never considered that and it would be even more stupid now than it was a fortnight ago.
"All that I know, if I understood correctly, is that he was ready to lower his salary to go to Arsenal, but that's not the same thing.
"I spoke to his lawyer two weeks ago and he asked for the power of attorney to negotiate a transfer. I said no, but I would be keen to offer a non-exclusive power of attorney to see what happens."

West Ham seal Downing switch.

West Ham have completed the signing of winger Stewart Downing from Liverpool.

The 29-year-old has joined Sam Allardyce's side on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee thought to be in the region of £5m.
Downing, who has won 34 caps for England, follows striker Andy Carroll in making the summer switch from Anfield to Upton Park and is looking forward a new chapter in his career.
"I'm very excited. It's a great opportunity for me being here, it's a great club and I'm really excited to get going," Downing told the club's website.
"I'm ready and I'm fit for the first game against Cardiff City. I've played a decent few games for Liverpool in pre-season, so there will be no problems on that front.
"It's all happened quickly, but I'm really excited and hoping to play a part on Saturday."
Downing began his career with Middlesbrough, making his debut as a 17-year-old in 2002.
He joined Aston Villa following Boro's relegation from the Premier League in 2009 and was voted their Player of the Season for 2010-2011.

Arsenal hold Gustavo talks.

Arsenal are in talks with Bayern Munich over midfielder Luiz Gustavo, although the Brazilian is interesting a number of clubs.

Talks are ongoing between Arsenal and the German giants over a potential deal for the midfielder.
A deal of £15million is being reported and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger confirmed over the weekend talks were ongoing.
It has been claimed that a deal was close, but Bayern's CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says Gustavo has a number of different options and he had not yet decided on his destination.
"Luiz has offers from England, Spain, Russia and Germany. The player has not made a decision, yet," he is quoted by Abendzeitung Muenchen.
Reports in Italy also claimed that Napoli could be ready to join the hunt for the 26-year-old.

Celtic warned over Finnbogasan.

 Celtic have been warned it will take a big fee to persuade Heerenveen to sell Alfred Finnbogason.

Scottish champions Celtic are thought to be weighing up a move for Finnbogason as they look to bring in a striker to help fill the void left by Gary Hooper's departure to Norwich.
Celtic are thought to have watched Finnbogason score in Heerenveen's 2-0 win over NAC Breda on Saturday, while a number of other clubs are also thought to be keeping tabs on the Icelandic international.
Heerenveen sporting director Gaston Sporre admits they will listen to offers for Finnbogason, but that it would have to be a big fee to sell him.
"He's good for at least 20 goals a season for us and we won't sell him for a reduced fee," said Sporre.
"If we get a concrete offer for him we will negotiate, but our aim is to keep him here at Heerenveen. He hasn't told us he is unhappy or asked for a transfer. We will wait and see."
Heereveen coach Marco van Basten also claimed it would take a lot of money to prise Finnbogason away from the club.

Celtic ended Liverpool's decent pre-season run of results with a 1-0 victory in the Dublin Decider at the Aviva Stadium.

Amido Balde struck the only goal in the Irish capital as Brendan Rodgers' side were beaten for the first time in six friendly games.
Liverpool lacked threat going forward in the absence of Luis Suarez, although the reappearance of substitute Daniel Sturridge after injury was a promising sign.
Sturridge had been out since May with a damaged ankle but managed 45 minutes and was twice close to a goal, first with a lob and then with a fierce shot into the side netting.
By that stage, Liverpool were behind to a strike from the lively Balde, who turned Andre Wisdom and fired a shot through Simon Mignolet's dive (13).
Liverpool tested Lukas Zaluszka plenty before the break, Stewart Downing and Philippe Coutinho going close, while Sturridge's movement caused problems after half-time.
But the scoreline stayed the same in Liverpool's final game before next week's opener against Stoke.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas refused to be drawn any further on the future of Real Madrid target Gareth Bale - but stressed the midfielder would link up with Wales next week.

Bale was a notable absentee as Tottenham rounded off their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw against Espanyol at White Hart Lane on Saturday afternoon, when summer signing Roberto Soldado marked his home debut with a goal from the penalty spot in the first half.
It was a sound performance from Spurs, who look well-equipped to challenge for the top four of the Barclays Premier League once again.
But the debate surrounding whether or not talismanic winger Bale will remain past the September 2 transfer deadline will continue to make the headlines as the Spanish giants are said to be ready to spend the best part of £100million to land him.
Villas-Boas said: "The only thing I can say about the stories is I am not going to comment because everybody has speculated a lot. There are some different stories, some which are not true, with people inventing without knowledge of what is going on.
"The only thing I can tell you is the player is under the treatment of the medical department for this pain in the foot which is disturbing him.

RVP tells Wayne to remain red.

Robin van Persie is keen for unsettled forward Wayne Rooney to remain at Manchester United, with the Dutchman admitting that one of the reasons why he moved to Old Trafford was to team-up with the talented Englishman.

Rooney is wanted by one of United's main title rivals, Chelsea, who have made two unsuccessful bids for the 27-year-old.
Rooney's United future has been unclear since the end of last season but Van Persie is in no doubt that he wants his team-mate to remain at the club.
"I hope he stays. Not only is he a great goalscorer, he does so much work across the pitch. "He hates to lose and that's why you see him one minute pressing for goal, the next minute defending ferociously. He is an asset to any team.
"He will come good again. He is a strong lad."
Meanwhile, United manager David Moyes has confirmed that he is not unhappy about Rooney linking up with the England squad.

Tottenham in Capoue talks.

Tottenham are in talks with Toulouse over the signing of midfielder Etienne Capoue, Sky sources understand.

The France international, a defensive midfielder who can also play at the back, has been attracting interest from Cardiff, who had an £8.6m bid for him accepted only for the deal to fall through.
Spanish side Atletico Madrid have also expressed an interest but Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas looks to have stolen a march on them, with Toulouse president Olivier Sadran suggesting the player could be on his way to White Hart Lane.
Capoue scored seven goals in 34 league appearances for Toulouse last season and would be Spurs' fourth signing of the summer if the deal goes through.
Brazilian playmaker Paulinho, Belgian winger Nacer Chadli and Spain striker Roberto Soldado have already moved to north London.
But it is the future of an existing Totenham player that continues to make the headlines, as Gareth Bale continues to be heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid.

The Brazilian international midfielder has penned a five-year deal with the Ukrainian giants.

Moyes: Rooney is going nowhere.

Wayne Rooney is "not for sale" and will remain a Manchester United player, according to David Moyes.

The new United manager faced the media at his first press conference since replacing Sir Alex Ferguson and immediately sought to put an end to speculation linking Rooney with a summer move.
The England striker's future was thrown into doubt towards the end of last season when Sir Alex Ferguson claimed he had requested a transfer for the second time in three years.
But United have consistently said they will not sell, and Moyes could not have been clearer as he fielded questions on Rooney in Old Trafford's Europa Suite.

He said: "Wayne Rooney is not for sale. He's a Manchester United player and will remain a Manchester United player.

"I've had several meetings with Wayne, he's training brilliantly well, he's come back in good shape and I really look forward to working with him."
Pressed on whether Rooney has made it clear he now wants to stay at Old Trafford, Moyes would not answer the question directly.
Instead, he said: "We've spoken several times and I'm saying: 'whatever happened before is gone Wayne, we're working together now.
"And I see a glint in his eye now. He looks happy, as if he is saying 'I'm going to knuckle down and get myself right'. I can only say I've been impressed with how he's done."

Toulalan signs for Monaco.

Monaco have continued their summer spending spree with the signing of France international Jeremy Toulalan from Malaga.

The 29-year-old midfielder has penned a two-year contract with Monaco with the option of a further year on top, the newly-promoted Ligue 1 club have announced on their website.
Toulalan, who will be presented by his new club on Monday, joins the likes of Radamel Falcao, Ricardo Carvalho, James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho as new arrivals at the big-spending Monte Carlo club, who are bankrolled by ambitious Russian owner Dmitry Rybolovlev.
Monaco sporting director Vadim Vasilyev said on his club's website: "We are happy with the signature of Jeremy. His skills, his European and international experience, will be an important asset for our team this season."
Toulalan joined Malaga from Lyon in 2011 and played 57 competitive matches for the Primera Division outfit. The former Nantes player has won 36 caps with France.

Reports in Argentina claim Gonzalo Higuain's father - and agent - Jorge has finally been given permission by Real Madrid to open talks with Arsenal.

Arsenal are thought to have been locked in talks with Real for weeks about a deal for the Argentina international striker and sources claim that the two clubs have now agreed a deal.
Real Madrid reportedly wanted €25m (£21m) for the 25-year-old, with Arsenal's opening offer believed to be €20m but it appears a compromise has now been reached, although it would still represent a club-record deal for the English club.
Higuain senior was quoted as telling Fox Sports Argentina: "We have been given permission by Real Madrid to negotiate with Arsenal.
"I will luckily be able to see my son in the Premier League soon."

Celtic set to sign Mouyokolo.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has revealed he is set to offer Steven Mouyokolo a deal after impressing on trial.

The former Hull and Wolves defender has been on trial at Celtic and started in Wednesday's friendly defeat to Ukrainian side Sevastopol.
The 26-year-old has impressed Lennon and the club are ready to hand him a one-year deal at Celtic Park.
Lennon is just waiting for Mouyokolo's medical results before finalising the deal with the French defender having suffered a serious knee injury while on loan at Sochaux in 2012.
"We have liked Mouyokolo for a long time," Lennon told the Daily Record.
"He's had a few injury problems but has come on trial and impressed.

Chelsea and Paris St-Germain are battling to sign Edinson Cavani, but Napoli are refusing to drop their asking price for the Uruguay international.

The French club look set to rival the Stamford Bridge outfit for the signature of the 26-year-old, who was Serie A's top scorer last season with 29 goals, with Sky sources learning a £43million offer had been made by PSG.
Sky sources also understand that Jose Mourinho's Premier League side made an approach to Napoli earlier on Tuesday, but are unwilling to meet the £54m buy-out clause in Cavani's contract.
With the in-demand striker keen to end uncertainty over his future, it is believed that talks between his agent and Napoli officials over his fee are due to take place this week.
However, club president Aurelio De Laurentiis is refusing to budge on his valuation, and also denied received a firm bid from the Ligue 1 outfit.

Rooney arrives for key talks.

Wayne Rooney has arrived at Manchester United's training ground ahead of what could be a key day in deciding his future.

Sky sources understand the England striker is due to hold face-to-face talks with new United manager David Moyes at Carrington after becoming frustrated at his first-team role last season.
Rooney verbally requested a transfer in May, according to outgoing boss Sir Alex Ferguson, and Chelsea, Arsenal and Paris St Germain have all been linked with a summer move for the player.
But Rooney is yet to comment publicly on the speculation amid reports he disputes Ferguson's version of events.

Liverpool have continued rebuilding for the new season by finalising a deal to bring in Kolo Toure from Manchester City.

The Ivory Coast international completed his switch after signing a deal at Liverpool's Melwood training ground.
Toure is Liverpool's fourth signing of the summer, following Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas and Simon Mignolet to Anfield.
The 32-year-old said: "This means a lot to me. Firstly, I'm joining one of the best clubs in England.
"When I left City it was important for me to stay in England because it's the best league - and to join Liverpool is massive for me. Most of Liverpool's squad, including Toure and fellow new signings Alberto, Aspas and Mignolet, were all back at the club's Melwood training ground on Tuesday.
The only absentees were those players who have had international duty this summer, with the most high-profile of those being Luis Suarez.

Dortmund close on Aubameyang.

Borussia Dortmund are thought to be close to agreeing a deal for highly-rated St Etienne striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Reports emanating from Germany claim Dortmund are in pole position to land the Gabon international with talks at an advanced stage between both clubs.
A host of clubs across Europe have been linked with a move for Aubameyang, with Newcastle credited with a long-term interest in the 24-year-old.
However, it appears UEFA Champions League finalists Dortmund are ready to meet St Etienne's asking price for the prolific forward.

Reports on Sunday claimed the former Everton youngster has held a secret meeting with David Moyes and has told the incoming United boss he will stay at Old Trafford if he gets a new deal to replicate his current big-money terms. But ahead of the Confederations Cup final, Brazil star Neymar wants Rooney to follow in his footsteps and move to Spanish heavyweights Barcelona this summer.
Neymar said: "The style of football Barcelona play and the level of the players we have - we are the perfect club for the top players to join.

Ardiles praise for Higuain.

Gonzalo Higuain has the talent to have the same impact on the Premier League as Robin van Persie, according to Ossie Ardiles.

Real Madrid and Argentina international striker Higuain is widely expected to make the move to England this summer, with Arsenal reported to be on course to secure his signature.
The Gunners saw star striker Van Persie depart for Manchester United last summer and could then only look on as his goals fired the Red Devils to the Premier League title.
Argentina legend Ardiles believes that his fellow countryman can immediately make his mark in England's top division, should he make the move to Emirates Stadium.

Brazil produced a breathtaking performance at the Maracana to overwhelm Spain and claim their third consecutive Fifa Confederations Cup.

Driven on by the passion of a fiercely partisan crowd, the five-time world champions signalled their intent ahead of next summer's World Cup by ending Spain's 29-match competitive unbeaten record with a majestic display.
Fred scored twice, but Neymar again stole the show, scoring Brazil's second goal with a rasping left-foot shot.
To compound Spain's misery, Sergio Ramos missed a second-half penalty before Gerard Pique was sent off for bringing down Neymar as last man, with 22 minutes remaining.

At the final whistle, the Brazil fans proudly chanted 'the champions are back'. With David Luiz and Thiago Silva providing solidity at the back, the midfield generalship of Paulinho and the mercurial talents of Neymar in attack, the Selecao will certainly be a formidable proposition next year.

The streets around the Maracana had been a place of contrasts in the hours before the game. While protestors clashed with police a mile or so away, tens of thousands of Brazil fans danced in the streets.
The noise built to an incredible crescendo in the hour before kick-off, culminating with the Brazilian anthem, that stirred the passions of the partisan crowd.
History, too, was against Vicente Del Bosque's Spanish side. Brazil have not lost a competitive match on home soil since 1975 and you have to go back to 1934 to find the last time Spain had beaten them in a competitive match, home or away.
If Spain had dreamt of conjuring an early goal that might take the sting out of the mighty Maracana, they were made to think again by a Brazil side that pressed and probed and, carried on by the sheer emotion inside the stadium, snatched the lead inside two minutes.
Hulk's cross from the right was knocked down by Neymar at the back post. Fred lost his footing but as the ball came back his way, he swung a boot at it from the ground, lifting the ball up and over Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas and into the net.

Samba standard

Brazil are the first team to win three successive Fifa Confederations Cups. France won back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2003.

Spain, normally so calm and controlled, briefly lost their way. Oscar fired narrowly wide from a fantastic chance, while Casillas scrambled back to claw Paulinho's deft lob from under his crossbar.

Brazil pressed Spain with an intensity that has become their own hallmark in recent times. They attacked with a fluency and flair that unsettled the world champions and that left Pique and Ramos flummoxed time and time again.
On two occasions during the first half, Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers decided against sending Spain defenders off after first Neymar and then Oscar were tripped when through on goal. Both Ramos and Alvaro Arbeloa were show yellow cards, much to Brazil's frustration.

Uruguay 2-2 Italy (AET) Italy win 3-2 on penalties.

Gianluigi Buffon saved three penalties as Italy beat Uruguay to claim third place in the Fifa Confederations Cup.

Davide Astori put Italy ahead when he tapped home on the line before Edinson Cavani equalised with a low effort.
Alessandro Diamanti restored Italy's lead with a curling free-kick and then Cavani levelled again with a stunning free-kick to ensure extra-time.
Riccardo Montolivo was sent off for two yellow cards in extra-time but Italy held on to seal a 3-2 win on penalties.
Diego Forlan, Martin Caceres and Walter Gargano all missed to hand Italy third spot in Salvador.

Off the spot

Uruguay's penalty record is now won five, lost five. La Celeste had won their last two shoot-outs before this defeat; seeing off Argentina 5-4 in the 2011 Copa America quarter-finals, a tournament they went on to win. They also famously knocked Ghana out of the last World Cup in a shoot-out.

Just three days after 120 minutes and a penalty shoot-out defeat by Spain in the semi-finals, Italy had to go through it all again but this time they came out on top with Alberto Aquilani, Stephan El Shaarawy and Emanuele Giaccherini converting their spot-kicks to reprieve Mattia De Sciglio who missed.

It was left to Gargano to score Uruguay's fifth penalty to force Italy to take another but Buffon saved again after also denying Forlan and Caceres.
If there was any fatigue from Thursday's marathon against the world champions, it was not evident in Cesare Prandelli's side in the early stages with five changes made from that defeat helping the Azzurri command the early stages.
Despite dominating Spain for long periods on Thursday before their penalty shoot-out defeat, Italy lacked a killer touch in front of goal and a bit of fortune but they certainly got the latter for their opener here.
A Diamanti free-kick came off the bar and hit keeper Fernando Muslera on the back before heading towards the line just as Astori came in to make sure the ball was over.

Confederations Cup

Favourites Spain will face Brazil in the Confederations Cup final after a dramatic 7-6 penalty shoot-out victory against Italy in Fortaleza.

Spain substitute Jesus Navas drilled in the decisive penalty after Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci missed.
Italy dominated much of the 90 minutes but were left to pay for their misses.

Emanuele Giaccherini hit the Spain post in extra-time, while Gianluigi Buffon pushed Xavi's shot on to the woodwork.

Each of the first 12 penalties were converted in a high-quality shoot-out before Bonucci blasted his effort over Iker Casillas's crossbar.
His miss allowed new Manchester City winger Navas to coolly convert past Buffon to set up an eagerly anticipated clash against the host nation, 2-1 winners against Uruguay in their semi-final, in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.
But the complexion of the match would have been totally different had Italy, without injured striker Mario Balotelli, not squandered a host of goalscoring chances.
The Azzurri dominated a high-tempo first half as the tactical instructions of boss Cesare Prandelli - to stay tight and compact defensively before breaking quickly down the Spanish flanks - were carried out to perfection.
Spain, who beat their opponents 4-0 in the Euro 2012 final, looked vulnerable as they failed to cope with the Italian raids, but were left unpunished.

Transfer News

Isco makes move to Real Madrid.

Real Madrid have reached an agreement with Malaga to sign Isco on a five-year deal, for a reported fee of £23m.

Manchester City were also pursuing the midfielder, 21, with new manager Manuel Pellegrini hoping to lure him to England having been his boss at Malaga.
Isco, who recently won the Under-21 European Championship with Spain, is due to have a medical on 3 July before being presented at the Bernabeu.
He becomes new Real manager Carlo Ancelotti's first signing.
Isco was signed by Pellegrini from Valencia in 2011 and had suggested he wanted to play under him again next season, calling his former boss a "footballing father".

The playmaker signed a new contract with Malaga at the beginning of the year, which included a £30m buy-out clause.

Asked about Isco at a news conference on Wednesday, Ancelotti said: "From what I have seen of him, it's clear he has a lot of quality.
"Spain's Under-21 side has a lot of great players and he is one of the best. He could get into any team in the world, so he could also play for Madrid."
Isco - real name Francisco Roman Alarcon - scored three goals in five games as Spain triumphed at Euro 2013 in Israel, but also made his senior international debut against Uruguay in February.

Tevez signs for Juventus.

Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has completed his £12m move to Italian champions Juventus.

City and Juve agreed a deal of £10m that could rise by £2m with add-ons.

The Argentina international, 29, arrived in Italy on Wednesday for a medical and signed a three-year contract.

When the fee is combined with wages and bonuses due to Tevez in the final year of his contract, City could save about £27m.
The two clubs reached an agreement at a meeting in London on Tuesday.
Hundreds of Juventus fans turned up at Milan's Malpensa airport to welcome the player.
Juve announced his arrival with a picture of him alongside club president Andrea Agnelli  holding up the number 10 jersey.
Tevez signed a five-year contract when he joined the Sky Blues in 2009 after previously playing for Manchester United.
City paid his advisors - who owned his contract - a reported £25.5m fee, although some have claimed the figure was £47m.
He has made 148 appearances for the club, scoring 74 goals, but the relationship with former manager Roberto Mancini soured in 2011 when he was fined and suspended following an incident in a Champions League match against Bayern Munich.
City must now search for a replacement but have said they will not pay the £53m asking price for Napoli forward Edinson Cavani.

Confederations Cup

Brazil 2-1 Uruguay.

Brazil scraped into the final of the Confederations Cup with victory in an emotional and highly-charged encounter at the Estadio Mineirao.

Paulinho's late header ensured the Selecao finally saw off a resilient Uruguay to set up a clash with Spain or Italy in the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.
Fred had given Brazil a scarcely-deserved first-half lead, prodding home Neymar's cross. But Uruguay hit back shortly after the interval when Edinson Cavani capitalised on an error from Brazil captain Thiago Silva to strike a low shot beyond Julio Cesar.

Home goalkeeper Cesar had earlier saved Diego Forlan's first-half penalty, after David Luiz pulled down Uruguay captain Diego Lugano.

This was a test of character and spirit for Luiz Felipe Scolari's Brazil but the jubilation among the players and coaching staff at the final whistle showed just how much this meant. Brazil never approached their fluent best but they did just enough to get over the line.
The build-up had been every bit as passionate and spiky as the game itself. Cesar had described the rivalry between the nations as more intense than that of Brazil's with Argentina, while Uruguay captain Diego Lugano had accused Neymar of attempting to fool referees by diving.

 

Confederations Cup

Here are the results of the Confederations Cup games that were played in Group B:

Nigeria 0-3 Spain.

Spain will face Italy in the Confederations Cup semi-finals after they beat Nigeria to top Group B.

Jordi Alba scored twice, stroking in following a flowing move early on and then rounding Nigerian goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama with two minutes left.
Nigeria caused problems for Spain's defence in between with John Mikel Obi and Sunday Mba going close.
Fernando Torres headed in two minutes after coming on as a substitute, before Alba sealed it to knock Nigeria out.
The goal from Chelsea striker Torres took the heat out of the contest, but despite Spain's superiority in possession, Nigeria were let down again by poor finishing when substitute Gambo Muhammad squirmed the ball wide with 15 minutes left.

He was set up by the impressive Ahmed Musa, who also created a great opportunity for Brown Ideye, but the striker's touch let him down in front of an open goal.

And although coach Stephen Keshi's Super Eagles bow out of the tournament with a solitary victory over Tahiti to finish third in Group B behind Uruguay, there were signs of encouragement for his young side.
Had they converted their chances the story of this game might have been different, but there was a sense that Spain still had another gear to move into if they needed it.

Uruguay 8-0 Tahiti.

Abel Hernandez scored a first-half hat-trick as Uruguay booked a place in the Confederations Cup semi-finals with a comprehensive win over Tahiti.

The striker scored a header and finished a Nicolas Lodeiro pass before Diego Perez and Hernandez made it four.

Suarez's worthwhile cameo

Luis Suarez came off the bench to score twice, moving him above Diego Forlan to become Uruguay's all-time leading goal-scorer with 35.

Andres Scotti's penalty was saved before the Uruguayan and Tahiti's Teheivarii Ludivion were sent off.

Lodeiro scored a fifth and Hernandez converted from the spot before substitute Luis Suarez added two more.
Oscar Tabarez's team will now face hosts Brazil in the last four on Wednesday.
Uruguay knew that a point would probably be enough to progress and Tabarez was confident enough to make 11 changes with the last four in mind.
That included leaving out Suarez, Edinson Cavani and Diego Forlan out of the starting line-up but Palermo's Hernandez, who had only scored three international goals before the match, provided plenty of cutting edge.
The amateurs of Tahiti have won plenty of praise for their efforts in Brazil and there were positives for them to take away from Recife, with striker Steevy Chong-Hue impressing and debutant Gilbert Meriel being able to celebrate his penalty save from Scotti.
But their prospects of claiming any more than flashes of pride were over after just one minute and 19 seconds, when Hernandez scored the quickest goal in the history of the competition.

Witsel's keen on move to PSG.

Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel admits a move to Paris Saint-Germain would be impossible to turn down, after being linked with the Ligue 1 champions.

The Belgium international has been linked with PSG - with reports in France suggesting the Argentine striker Ezequiel Lavezzi could move the other way in part-exchange.
"For now my mind is 100 per cent focused on Zenit," Witsel told Belgian daily Sudinfo.
"PSG are one of the clubs who no player could be indifferent to. You could not refuse that."
Laurent Blanc is set to replace Carlo Ancelotti as PSG coach and Witsel is in the dark as to whether the former Bordeaux and France coach would be interested in signing him.

 AC Milan rule out Tevez raid.

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani claims the Italian outfit have no plans to make a move for Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez.

Galliani had hinted in the past that the Argentine frontman would be of interest to the Rossoneri.
He was quick to point out that players would need to be moved on first in order to free up funds, and maintains that is still the case if Milan are to add to their ranks.
It is, however, unlikely that Tevez will be targeted if sales are sanctioned - ruling out the prospect of him being reunited with former City team-mate Mario Balotelli at the San Siro.
"Tevez is not a transfer target for us," said Galliani.
"Before we will try to bring in new players, we will have to sell some of our own players first.
"It's not a financial problem, but has to do with the amount of attackers we already have. At the moment, we already have seven players for just three positions.

 

Confederations Cup

Here are the results of the two games that were played in Group A:

Brazil 4-2 Italy.

Neymar proved the inspiration once again as Brazil gave themselves the best chance of avoiding a semi-final with Spain by topping Group A with a dramatic victory over Italy in Salvador.

The 21-year-old lit up the Arena Fonte Nova with a spectacular second-half free-kick while striker Fred scored twice to set the Selecao on their way to a third straight win in the Confederations Cup.
Substitute Dante had prodded in to give Brazil the lead on the stroke of half-time, only for Emanuele Giaccherini to bring Italy level with a fierce shot early in the second half.
Neymar then produced his moment of magic, before Fred appeared to put the game beyond Italy with 23 minutes remaining.
Italy, however, came roaring back with a controversial and scrappy goal from Giorgio Chiellini. The Azzurri had the better of the final quarter of the match but Brazil made certain late on when Fred pounced as Gianluigi Buffon failed to hold Marcelo's shot to send the stadium into raptures.

The result means Brazil are likely to meet Uruguay in a semi-final in Belo Horizonte on Wednesday. Italy face the prospect of a last four meeting with world champions Spain in Fortaleza, 24 hours later.

Much too had been made of the battle between two of the world's most gifted young players in Neymar and Mario Balotelli. Both were forced to ride some fierce, physical challenges throughout the game but underlined their immense talent with outstanding displays at either end.

Japan 1-2 Mexico.

Two second-half headers by Javier Hernandez saw Mexico depart the Confederations Cup on a winning note as Japan finished bottom of Group A.

Andres Guardado, who headed against the woodwork, provided the cross which saw Hernandez open the scoring after a fine run by the Manchester United man.
Both teams were already eliminated, but Mexico sealed the win when Hernandez scored from Giovani Dos Santos' corner.

Shinji Okazaki scored a consolation before Hernandez missed a late penalty.

Hernandez was hauled down by substitute Atsuto Uchida before the 25-year-old got to his feet to take the spot-kick which was kept out by Eiji Kawashima.
In a dramatic finale, the ball rebounded back to Hernandez who missed out on a hat-trick by blazing his second attempt against the bar.
However, the miss did not prove costly as Mexico finished third behind Brazil and Italy in the four-team group.

So after that game this is how Group A looks at the end of the group stages.
